Abstract
This article presents a procedure for building product configuration systems. The procedure includes, as the first phase, an analysis and redesign of the business processes, which are to be supported with product configuration systems. The next phase includes an analysis of the product assortment, and the set up of a so-called product variant master. Finally the product configuration system is designed and implemented using object oriented modeling.
The procedure has been tested in several companies. This article includes the experiences from the most recent project, which has been carried out at Demex Electric – a Danish company making electronic switchboards.
The research has been carried out at the Centre for Product Modelling, Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Denmark.
