Abstract
Scale-up is traditionally done following specific ratios or rules of thumb which do not lead to optimal results. We present a
generic framework to assist in scale-up of wastewater treatment processes based on multiscale modelling, multiobjective optimisation and a
validation of the model at the new large scale. The framework is illustrated by the scale-up of a complete autotropic nitrogen removal process.
The model based multiobjective scaleup offers a promising improvement compared to the rule of thumbs based emprical scale up rules
