A method is described by which the surface temperature of a steel cylinder containing radioactive waste can be calculated. The method assumes a time-dependent continuous line source in cylindrical symmetry and it applies Laplace transformation. The resultant Laplace transform is approximated and then inverted (by convolution). The method is computationally fast and future generalisations to similar problems are suggested.
