    Abstract

The 56Fe(n,γ)57Fe reaction can be used to populate the 14 keV MBssbauer
level in 57Fe. This offers in principle a possibility of non-destructive investigation of the chemical effects of neutron capture-Y recoil in iron compounds. Targets of K4Fe(CN)g·3H2O and Fe(COO)2·2H20 were irradiated in a neutron beam and simultaneously used as sources in a MSssbauer experiment. No resonances were detected with K4Fe(CN)6·3H2O, but weak resonances from Fe(COO)2·2H20 suggest that in this compound some recoil-57Fe is stabilized as divalent iron. Various improvements of the experimental set-up are considered; however, it appears that such experiments are not very promising from a "hot-atom chemistry" point of view.
