The project focuses on skills development within the group of industrial workers in Malysia in relation to the reorganizing of manufacturing as conditioned by new patterns of international competition. It builds upon the experience from three previous studies on sociological aspects of the industrial development in Malaysia. The objective of the project is to contribute to the discussion about changing work processes, which is conducted in industrialized countries as well. In particular, the study will address the questions about the relationship between 'global' production concepts and the 'local' context, the subjective dimensions of skills development, and the significance of the national industrial culture.
