Stresses and cracks in surface coatings

    Project Details

    Description

Most coatings applied to engineering components are deliberately hard and almost always brittle. The combination of residual stresses and brittleness means that we will mostly be concerned with cracks in the coating.
Most coatings are thin and brittle and are applied to comparatively thick and ductile substrates. We will therefore often be concerned with delamination between the coating and substrate and in the worst case, spalling of the coating away from the substrate.
