Spatial stock structure for sandeel (39722/104233)

Description

The project will lead to a more solid basis for the geographical stock structure as an input to the MSY-based management of sandeel in the North Sea. New tagging methodology must be developed and the recapture results must either accept or reject hypotheses about the migration of the sandeel on different geographical scales. 

Activities/work packages of the project: 
- WP1) Method development and practical experiments with the tagging and re-capture of sandeels on and off fishing grounds in the sandeel management areas SA1r, SA2r and SA3r in the North Sea in cooperation with fishermen and factories. 
- WP2) Analysis of natural chemical and physical markers in the otoliths of the sandeel from collected material, GEUS cooperation. 
- WP3) Collection and analysis of sandeel DNA and use of completely newly discovered SNP-based marker for analysis of how geographic sub-populations are connected. 
- WP4) Project management, steering committee, coordination and reporting/communication. 

Expected impact of the project: Better knowledge of the stock structure of sandeel is essential for optimal stock assessment and the basis for future management ensuring the sustainable exploitation of the North Sea sandeel stock, taking full account of the value of local stock components as donor or receptor areas for recruitment, food chain needs and fishing. Better knowledge of the relationship between sandeel banks and areas increases the scope for flexibility in management, thus providing better quota utilisation, less fuel consumption and securing the raw material base for the benefit of the profitability of fisheries and the fishmeal industry.
