Reducing the effects of seals on the fisheries (39697/104119)

Project Details

Description

The overarching goals of the project are to test various technical measures, which can mitigate the impact of seals on the coastal fishery, estimate the total consumption of cod by Baltic grey seals and estimate the actual bycatch rates of marine mammals in the gillnet fisheries.

More specifically the project will
1) Test the efficiency of a newly developed seal scarer in the longline fishery.
2) Test whether stop grids can reduce the depredation of seals on fish in pound nets.
3) Estimate the amount of fish that seals take from gillnets without leaving any trace.
4) Estimate the total consumption of cod by Baltic grey seals in the central Baltic Sea based on the distribution in time and space of seals and cod combined with data on consumption rates.
5) Estimate the marine mammal drop-out rate in gillnet fisheries, i.e. the fraction of bycaught marine mammals that drop out of the nets before coming to the surface.
