Description
Integrated solid waste management (ISWM) is a comprehensive approach that requires balancing environmental, economic, social, and technical dimensions to be effective. However, a significant gap exists in the literature, as mathematical models and decision-making frameworks for ISWM often neglect or oversimplify the social dimension. This oversight compromises the goal of creating truly sustainable and equitable waste management systems. This gap is particularly critical in the Global South and developing contexts, where the informal sector, including waste pickers, plays a crucial role in the recycling chain. Therefore, the primary question of this research is: how are social aspects and their impacts incorporated into mathematical and quantitative models for municipal solid waste management?
