    Project Details

The main objective of the PRIME project is to elaborate and expand ACTS' results into contributions to the multimedia market development, encouraging the convergence of and adherence to standards for multimedia service provision towards the needs of the emerging Global Information Society.
Standards have two main purposes: to reduce transactions costs and to achieve economies of scale. Standards may be imposed by merchants, by leading actors in an industry (as in many types of software production), or by industries as a whole as was traditionally in the telecommunication industries. In an industry as multimedia however with many companies and no obvious market leader, the opportunity of standardisation may be missed and economies of scale lost.
An open environment allowing widespread and open access to infrastructures and services is a key condition to reduce social exclusion and avoid the risk of a two-tier society (the information-have and information have-nots). By helping to achieve this goal PRIME project is contributing to create the conditions for a balanced social growth in Europe.
