Description
COMPETENT aims to develop and validate (to reach TRL 5) a novel, high-density, multigenerating compressed hydraulic pneumatic energy storage
(CHPES) technology for off-grid use in critical infrustructures, especially hospitals and data centers. The technology stores green electricity of local
renewable systems in the form of pressurized media, and reclaims that for co-generation of electricity, cooling, and/or heating in a highly efficient,
sustainable, and cost-effective manner, upon demand. Bsesides an innovative integrated design, the concept centers on several component level
innovations including a novel quasi-isothermal hydraulic-pneumatic compression system, an advanced quasi-isobaric high density air storage
mechanism, and a highly efficient, scalable linear electricity generator. The propsoed solution stands out techno-economically in competition with any
other storage technologies for the same sort of applications owing to its i) competitive cost effectiveness due to its very high overall efficiency of
150% upon trigeneration and up to 78% power-to-power efficiency in case of electricity-only design, very long expected lifespan without any
cyclability issues, and simplified design/operation, ii) flexibility of trigeneration of electricity, heating, and/or cooling based on the case specific needs
of the end-user, iii) modular and containerizable design making it highly scalable and integrable into broader network of off-grid end-users as needed
over time, iv) no environmental impacts, toxicity, or human health issues, v) high flexibility for occasional on-grid operation and bi-directional
interactions for maximized benefits, if needed. The consortium consists of 11 partners from across europe, including 3 universities, 2 research
centers, and 5 SMEs, and 1 NGO ensuring that all required expertise exists for the successful completion of the project and future exploitation, and
that the partners optimally supplement each other.
