New and improved biological and mechanical water treatment technologies for reduction of the environmental impact from aquaculture facilities (113290)

Project Details

Description

The purpose of the project is to test, further develop and implement new and existing water treatment technologies with the aim to reduce the environmental impact of the discharge from Danish fish farms. The purpose is to find and develop methods to reduce the release of N, P, organic material and chemical additives.

The project contains four work packages that are all practically oriented and contain studies and documentation of different types of water treatment technologies. Each work package is handled by researchers at DTU Aqua, and includes investigations and documentation of biological and mechanical water treatment technologies inside the production units and in the discharge. The experiments are carried out under controlled conditions at DTU Aqua's experimental facilities in Hirtshals. Subsequently, the new operating practices are tested and verified on commercial fish farms in collaboration with technology and equipment manufacturers. Testing and documentation of the cleaning technologies at the commercial aquaculture facilities is carried out in collaboration with Aquapri Denmark, FREA Solutions, Rockwool and Freshwater Fisheries Association Denmark.

Funding
The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Danish Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme (EMFAF).
