Methods for reduction of plastic in the sea from wastewater in Greenland

Project Details

Description

The purpose of this project is to facilitate the decision-making regarding implementation of solutions in small, remote, arctic communities to reduce the load of plastic from sewage to the sea. More specific the project aims to:
Identify the common primary sources of plastic in sewage in general (through literature review). Investigate the mass, size-fractionation, important litter types and plastic plymers (PP, PE, PVC, etc.) of plastic in sewage at one location in Nuuk and one in Sisimiut (through an empirical study of sewage and interviewing of municipality professionals engaged with wastewater in the five municipalities of Greenland). Evaluate the efficiency of the mechanical filter being tested in Nuuk on removing plastic (through empirical studies). Evaluate the efficiency of wastewater technologies towards removing the present plastic fractions and their feasibility in small, (cold), remote settings (through literature studies). Based on the empirical study of sewage, evaluate whether some plastic fractions may be avoided by specific trade regulations or the introduction of behavioral change initiatives (through literature review).
