    Description

    The objective of this project is to investigate the utility of SAR data for studies of glacier mass balance and dynamics. Study areas were the Storstrømmen glacier and the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden glacier, Northeast Greenland.
    In 1996, work has focused on the use of ERS-1/2 satellite SAR data. Two descending orbit pairs and two ascending pairs had sufficient correlation to be unwrapped reliably. This allowed a multi-baseline technique to be applied to pairs from the same orbit family (descending or ascending), and thus the elevation term and the displacement term of the interferometric phase were separated. By combining measurements from ascending and descending orbits having different look directions and assuming a surface parallel flow the full 3-D velocity field was derived. The SAR-derived elevations and flow-velocity vectors were in excellent agreement with in situ GPS point-measurements obtained by our project partners.
    In 1997, ERS-1/2 SAR scenes over the large floating tongue of Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden glacier were processed. Moreover, an airborne EMISAR mission was conducted on this glacier. Data from a 40 km by 100 km area were acquired in XTI mode for generation a high resolution DEM of the surface. Also data from a 25 km by 50 km cross section near the grounding line were acquired for measuring flow velocities. Preliminary processing shows the data to be of good quality.
    In both of the years 1996 and 1997, our project partner GEUS performed field work on Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden Glacier. The collected in situ data will be used as ground control for both the space borne and airborne interferometric SAR studies. (Related projects - see: www.dcrs.dtu.dk).
