Mathematical models of
mechanical systems exhibit
instability if the stiffness
matrices are indefinite.
Under certain circumstances
such systems may be
stabilized by adding
gyroscopic terms. The
investigation includes
specific systems (e.g. a
simple model of a spaceship)
as well as the mathematical
behaviour of general systems
in the vicinity of multiple
eigenvalues.
