IBT Culture Collection of Fungi

    Project Details

    Description

The IBT culture collection (registrered as culture collection #758 by World Federartion of Culture Collections) is managed by the Mycology Group at the Department of Biotechnology, DTU.
In January 1998, the IBT collection contains approx. 19.000 fungal cultures, mainly within the genera Penicillium, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Alternaria, and Trichoderma. The cultures are kept as dried onto silica gel crystals, as soil cultures and by lyophilization of conidial suspensions. Strain data on identity, profile of secondary metabolites, origin, accession numbers in other collections are computerized in a database. The nomenclature used follows the up-dated modern concepts in agreement with the international societies. The IBT collection also contains approx. 400 standards of fungal secondary metabolites.
    Services offered:
The IBT culture collection offers a service to identify fungal strains submitted as pure cultures on agar slants or petri dishes, and to determine their profile of secondary metabolites. Cultures consisting of more species will be purified at an extra charge, unless other agreements have been entered. Cultures infested with mites are destroyed immediately upon arrival to avoid a possible contamination of the IBT collection.
To facilitate a fast and correct identification it is recommended to give data on source
of isolation, recommended growth conditions, associated toxicoses (case-stories) etc.
The metabolite profiles are determined by analyzing pure cultures on artificial agar
substrates by thin layer chromatography (TLC) or analyzing extracts of pure cultures by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) . IBT culture collection also offers to analyze extracts submitted as concentrated, purified, defatted methanolic solutions. Please contact IBT culture collection for detailed instructions before submission of extracts. At the moment only semi-quantitative analyses are performed.
