Project Details
Description
Coastal fisheries for species such as lumpfish, eel, plaice, flounder and turbot has a long history dating back hundreds of years. This fishery is usually carried out close to the coast and with smaller vessels that are often based locally.
The COASTFISH project aims to address a handful of more or less independent issues and management needs that are highly relevant to this fishery and the management authorities. These can be summarised under the following four headings (which also correspond to the work packages):
(1) Proposal for a management strategy for lumpfish,
(2) New knowledge on plaice, flounder and turbot,
(3) New knowledge on fisheries in oxygen depleted areas,
(4) Exploring the possibility of a national coastal fish monitoring programme.
Activities include sampling, laboratory analyses (microchemical and genetic), reconstruction of landing data back in time (lumpfish), data analyses of both existing and new data, and dialogue with partners and the relevant authorities.
