Fluorinated compounds are important chemical building blocks for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. They are currently produced through chemical synthesis, which employs a range of hazardous chemicals and procedures. Bioproduction of fluorochemicals would offer a sustainable alternative but is limited by the availability of suitable biocatalysts. In this project we will study fluorinase enzyme, which is the only known enzyme capable of catalysing C-F bond formation. The fluorinase enzyme is highly selective for its substrate and therefore enzyme engineering is required before it can be used in biotechnology. We will engineer the enzyme to accept compounds relevant for industry and produce these new compound in vivo.
