Effects of coastal fisheries on benthic fauna (39813/104219)

Project Details

Description

The purpose of the project is to develop the scientific basis for the management of seabed-contacting fisheries in Danish coastal waters, and to develop and test innovative management tools and seabed indicators. The project will assess fishery effects on benthic fauna across all Danish Water Framework Directive (WFD) waterbodies using a combination of monitoring data and dedicated data collection.

The aim of this work is to (i) generate results that are directly relevant to fisheries management (ii) to place a particular focus on coastal fisheries, which lack evidence-based benthic impact assessments.

The project deliverables are proposed to directly improve the ability of management to monitor human pressures under the WFD, improve fishery impact assessment in coastal areas subject to multiple pressures, and test an ICES developed benthic impact tool in coastal waters, thereby increasing the ability to accurately assess fisheries impact. This latter point is of particular relevance as the benthic impact tool has the potential to reduce coastal monitoring requirements, and thus costs for monitoring, by providing alternative modelling approaches. Furthermore, the project provides the opportunity to test and compare methods that may be applicable across several of the main marine environmental directives. Therefore by improving coastal fishery management advice and impact assessments, the project can support and develop the coastal fishing industry and ensure that fishing is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable in these areas.
