The green transition is one of the greatest global challenges in human history. Both society, busi-nesses, and scientists play an important role to create and develop green and sustainable tech-nology for the benefit of the global society, the planet, and our future generations.

Power-to-X and Carbon Capture are two of such green technologies. A Power-to-X system pro-duces green fuels for e.g. the aviation and shipping industry. A Carbon Capture system captures CO2 from CO2 emitting factories or from the air.
These Power-to-X and Carbon Capture technologies are still in the early phase of development and the price to build and operate such systems is high and not competitive in commercial markets yet, especially not in developing countries. To bring these green technologies to everyone, Power-to-X and Carbon Capture systems need to be both cheap, accessible, and as efficient as possi-ble. That is where Digital Twins play an important role.

A digital twin is a virtual copy of some real-world physical object. The digital twin looks, acts, and behaves just like the real-world object, but in a digital world. Digital twins are built on mathematics, statistics and machine learning and are used to understand, monitor, and predict future behavior for a physical system.

In this project we develop digital twin models for Power-to-X and Carbon Capture systems. The models will be based on both basic, underlying, physical principles and data collected by meas-urements at the physical facilities. These measurements can be seen as the “senses” of the digital twin. When the digital twin “sees” or “hears” information about the physical system, the digital twin will learn and adapt to the new knowledge to mimic the behavior of the physical system as accu-rate as possible.
Like a GPS system in your car which constantly helps you find the best route to your destination based on real-time traffic updates, a digital twin of a Power-to-X or Carbon Capture facility will con-stantly try to find the best way to operate the facility in the most efficient way.

With more efficient operation and an easily scalable digital twin software, Power-to-X and Carbon Capture systems will become cheaper and more accessible to everyone, enhancing the green transition across the entire globe, one step at a time.
