Project Details


The purpose of this research project is to develop and investigate new optical components and subsystems for use in WDM networks. Of interest are filters, add/drop multiplexers, wavelength routers and cross-connects.
New 2x2 multi-wavelength cross connects based on optical add/drop multiplexers have been developed.
Furthermore, a very low crosstalk wavelength router construction using arrayed-waveguide grating multi/demultiplexer has been made.
The optical components in a WDM network need to be characterized also. Of importance is their optical transfer function both in amplitude and phase. For instance, a non-linear optical phase transfer function will give rise to dispersion and differential group delay distortion. The dispersion in one component might be small but when several components are cascaded the overall dispersion could become essential. We have developed a method for measuring small dispersion values in optical components.
