Collection of data on bycatch of seabirds, mammals and sensitive fish and abundance of sensitive fish (39834/106539)

Project Details

Description

The project aims to collect by-catch data for seabirds, marine mammals and sensitive fish, as well as data on population densities of sensitive fish.

Data for bycatch of seabirds and harbour porpoise are collected based on CCTV on selected Danish vessels and combined with the spatial distribution of fishing effort with different gear. Video material for the years 2018-2019 is analyzed, so that data from this can be included together with existing data from 2010-2017. By-catch of seabirds is calculated at species and sex level, while the by-catch of porpoises is calculated in total. By-catch of seals is calculated to the extent possible. The data on number caught are combined with information on the distribution of the fishery into a total calculation of by-catch in the net fishery (number of individuals).

Population size indices are provided for sensitive pelagic, demersal and deep-sea sharks, rays and bony fish. Where data allows by-catch information is also provided. Due to uncertain species determination and reporting of some rays, it is not possible to estimate the catch of all species. Data from ICES surveys, ICES stock assessments as well as DTU Aqua observer trips and landing statements will be included.
