Description

The project will solve the following challenges: 1) Power-to-X (PtX) producers cannot scale production of e-fuels due to an inability of proofing and ensuring carbon neutrality. 2) PtX producers cannot plan e-fuel production to take place in hours where electricity supply is fully renewable as current carbon accounting methodologies do not support hourly granularity.

The research activities include: (i) Methodological development defining a best-in-class carbon accounting framework enabling PtX producers to ensure 24/7 CFE matching and prove carbon neutrality of e-fuels produced. (ii) Data science applying vast amounts of historical and forecasted data on electricity consumption and renewable energy generation to automatically calculate historical 24/7 CFE matching performance and make forecasted 24/7 CFE matching proposals on optimal procurement strategies and electricity consumption pattern adjustments.

The project workstreams will achieve the following milestones: (A) A comprehensive review of emerging scientific literature on 24/7 CFE. The review is used as starting point to identify key requirements for a scientific 24/7 CFE accounting framework. (B) A novel scientific carbon accounting framework for scope 2 emissions based on the findings in (A) and dialogues with PtX producers, carbon accounting standard setting bodies, and other relevant stakeholders. (C) A functional tool integrating (B) in a digital, user-friendly dashboard providing emission data on 24/7 CFE performance and enabling feasible 24/7 CFE matching for PtX producers. (D) A matching algorithm enabling production of e-fuels to take place simultaneously with the production of additional electricity procured through PPAs and general grid availability of renewables.

The project will be the first step towards Reel’s long-term vision of making 24/7 CFE matching an “off-the-shelf” offering for all electricity consumers and thereby be a central contribution towards transitioning society to 100% renewable energy. The project further paves the way for other industries and sectors to adopt 24/7 CFE matching.
