A Semantic 3D Energy Model for Prosumer With Integrated Photovoltaics Systems

Project Details

Description

The S3EM project (Semantic 3D Energy Model for Prosumer With Integrated Photovoltaics Systems) aims to advance building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) for the EU’s green transition. It tackles efficiency limits by modeling both rooftop and facade solar surfaces of buildings, rather than just rooftops. The project’s goal is to develop accurate 3D semantic models using multimodal data, enabling better mapping of solar radiation and electrical potential. It also integrates BIPV systems with other energy systems via reinforcement learning methods. The project is coordinated by the Technical University of Denmark and funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions initiative, running from February 2025 to January 2027.

Key findings

The S3EM project developed a semantic 3D energy model for buildings with integrated photovoltaic (solar) systems, aiming for greater energy efficiency and supporting the EU’s green transition.

Traditional building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) mostly used rooftops. S3EM expanded the scope to include both rooftops and building facades, which increases the potential surface area for solar power generation.

The project incorporated advanced methods like using multimodal (various sources) data and reinforcement learning to accurately map and optimize solar energy usage.

The semantic 3D models enable more detailed and automated mapping of solar radiation and electrical potential for city-scale energy planning, making installation assessment easier and more precise.

Layman's description

This project helps make solar panels on buildings work much better. Instead of only putting solar panels on rooftops, it also finds ways to use the sides (facades) of buildings, meaning more places for solar energy. By creating a smart 3D digital map of buildings and using artificial intelligence to figure out how much solar power each spot can produce, it helps cities plan cleaner energy and cut down on pollution more efficiently. These digital models make it easier for cities and homeowners to know where to put solar panels for the best results.
