Søren Forchhammer conducts research in the area of visual communication technology and coding. He is leader of the group on Coding and Visual Communication Technology. Special focus is coding for communication including video and image coding, as well as coding for optical communication. He is leader of the activity on Information Theory, Capacity and Advanced Coding with in the DNRF SPOC Centre of Excellence at DTU Fotonik. He is heading activities on distributed video coding, multiview video coding, and processing of coded video for LED/LCD display. The work on visual communication covers the whole chain from video coding, transmission, reception, decoding, and processing for display. Underlying activities include coding theory and two-dimensional information theory. He has contributed to ISO/IEC image coding standards within the JPEG/JBIG standardization group. He is co-author of the book: J. Justesen and S. Forchhammer, Two-Dimensional Information Theory and Coding, Cambridge University Press, 2010.
