Bycatch

Interactions between fisheries and protected, endangered and threatened species. Bycatch monitoring by use of video and sensor systems, bycatch risk predictions, bycatch reduction tools such as acoustic deterrent devices, and development of fishing gears to avoid depredation or protect endangered and threatened species.

Collaboration with stakeholders

National and international collaboration with fishers, including interviews, gear development/designs, management options, fishing practices and implementation of CCTV on fishing vessels. Collaboration with national and international authorities, discussions on management options, best practices and protection of marine mammals.

• 2009-2011: ICES SGBYG, The Study Group for Bycatch of Protected Species.
• 2021- present: ACOM member, the Advisory Committee of ICES- marine mammals and bycatch issues.
• 2016-present: ECOFT, Expert Committee on Fishing Technologies, Saving the Vaquita in the Upper Gulf, Mexico.
• 2013-present: Porpoise Expert Group, AgriFish Agency, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.
