John Bagterp Jørgensens forsker i beregningsmetoder og algoritmer til model prædiktiv regulering, optimering og simulering. Resultaterne udvikles ofte i tæt samarbejde med industri- og erhvervs-virksomheder. Algoritmerne bruges bl.a. til styring af cementfabrikker. Algoritmerne har brede anvendelsesmuligheder og bruges konkret til at forbedrede olieudvindingsgraden i Nordsøen samt i en kunstig bugspytkirtel til mennesker med sukkersyge.
