Expertise

By challenging analytical technology, I strive to contribute to trust and transparency of our food by providing chemical insight, data and methods that are needed for efficient food control, to discover emerging risks in production and from new food ingredients, to documenting quality and to reveal fraud. By exploiting high-performance mass spectrometry and emerging analytical technology, the quest is to provide trust (and enlightenment) based on chemical insight by either using detailed chemical trace analysis or efficient, robust and scalable chemical analysis for routine praxis.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration and leveraging emerging technologies my aspiration is to contribute with fundamental insight and to practical solution in biotechnology and food science today that can address some of grand challenges today.

Equally compelling are the understanding how disruptive technologies change the structure and thinking in traditional institutions like universities, authorities and businesses.

With a background in analytical chemistry Jørn Smedsgaard has for more than 25 years focused on trace analysis by mass spectrometry in biotechnology and food. Today, Jørn Smedsgaard is heading of the Analytical Food Chemistry Research Group where he, together with approx. 30 colleagues, do research and extensive consultancy to the Danish Food Authorities regarding chemicals in food, food control, traceability and analytical technology and is responsible for most Danish National Reference Laboratory for chemical compounds in food. The group is also responsible for two European Reference Laboratory (Food Processing Contaminants and Pesticides in Cereals and Feed) for the European Commission. The group is ISO 17025 and ISO 17043 accredited by DANAK.
