Other information

Current research focuses on Biorefinery Conversions and on creating new knowledge for development of innovative and cost-efficient processes for production of chemicals, materials and biofuels from biomasses and industrial effluents by:

          - Harnessing the potential of mixed microbial consortia by optimizing the selection and enrichment process as well as the fermentation operating strategy

-Providing knowledge on bioconversion kinetics of pure and mixed microbial cultures to be applied for process modeling and optimization

          - Developing innovative process concepts for enhancing the bioconversion efficiency and improving the economics by applying cost-efficient pretreatment methods and membrane-based downstream processing

          - Designing and experimentally evaluating novel combined bioenergy and biorefinery concepts

Research areas

General: Biological processing of biomass resources and industrial effluents for the sustainable production of biofuels and chemicals with emphasis on fermentation technology with mixed microbial consortia and development of innovative concepts targeting cost-efficient bioconversions.

Specific: Anaerobic digestion, fermentation processes with pure and mixed microbial consortia, PHA production and separation, pre-treatment methods for biomass exploitation, kinetics of microbial processes, development of mathematical models and mathematical simulation of biological processes, membrane applications in biorefineries.
