PhD in Environmental Monitoring with Unmanned Airborne Vehicles

Filippo is a PostDoctoral researcher at DTU Environment in the Air, Land and Water Resources section (ALW).  He teaches, supervises students and researches remote sensing with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). His PhD was focused on the development and application of new sensing techniques for UAVs platforms, targeting hydraulic variables in surface water bodies. He designed, validated and applied microwave and acoustic techniques to measure orthometric water level (water surface elevation) and bathymetry in rivers and lakes. He initiated development of a UAV-borne water surface velocity sensing technique that, together with level and depth, will enable estimation of river discharge. He applied the developed techniques in different hydrologic systems in Denmark, Sweden, Italy and Mexico.

He is currently also evaluating new remote sensing methods to estimate water leakages in water distribution pipes, including thermal and microwave UAV-borne remote sensing.
