International experience

Cristiano joined the Dept. of Environmental Biotechnology of ENEA in 2004, when he obtained a 2 year post-graduate Research Scholarship and worked at the project “Methods for the classification of the chemical and ecological quality state of waters”. His activity focused on the biochemical characterization and the degradation of the organic matter in eutrophic coastal lagoons. From 2006 he started to work as a ENEA Research Fellow on the Italian National Project: “Innovative systems for hydrogen production” , in which he studied the dark fermentation process, the degradation of the substrate and the statistical optimization of biohydrogen production. From 2009 to 2011 Cristiano was awarded with the EU Science and Technology Fellowship China, and visited the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), where he developed his own project about the linking of biohydrogen and biodiesel production, using the waste from the biodiesel as a source for biohydrogen production. In 2010 he was awarded with the “Distinguished International Students Scholarship” by the China Scholarship Council of the Ministry of Education of P. R. China (MOE), enrolling as a HIT PhD student in Environment Engineering. After coming back from China he joined the Department of Renewable Energy Sources (Laboratory of Biomass and Bioenergy) of the ENEA Casaccia Research Centre in Rome. 
Cristiano is now Scientific Coordinator of the China-Italy bilateral agreement and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of an FP7 KBBE Cooperation project about Glycerol Biorefinery. He was also promoter and co-coordinator of the FP7 project proposal. Cristiano also filed for a patent about the “Biological Conversion of Crude Glycerol into Hydrogen and Ethanol”. 
Besides Biofuels, Cristiano is now also working with the bioconversion of glycerol into Green Chemicals (VFAs and PHA). Last but not least, Cristiano is Research Director of the NGO "NESSE", also leading the Sustainable Development Goals Team.
