Personal profile

Chris Finlay is Professor of Geomagnetism at DTU Space.  His work focuses on understanding changes in the Earth's magnetic field, using a combination of satellite observations and computational modelling.  He has a Masters degree in Physics from the University of Oxford, UK and a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Leeds, UK.  He worked for 5 years as a researcher and lecturer at ETH Zurich before joining DTU Space in 2011.  In 2012 he was awarded the SEDI Doornbos Memorial Prize for outstanding work on the Earth's deep interior by a young scientist.  In 2010 he was lead author of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field.  Geomagnetic reference fields provide orientation information for a wide variety of applications, notably in mobile devices and for satellite navigation.   He has broad interests in inverse problems, machine learning, Earth observation from satellites, deep Earth physics and planetary magnetic fields.
