Chris Finlay is Professor of Geomagnetism at DTU Space.  His work focuses on changes in the Earth's magnetic field that occur on time scales from minutes to millennia, exploring both observational and theoretical aspects.  He has a Masters degree in Physics from the University of Oxford, UK and a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Leeds, UK.  He worked for 5 years as a post-doctoral researcher and then as an oberassistant (research scientist/lecturer) at ETH Zurich before joining DTU Space in 2011. He has also spent periods as an invited researcher in the US and France.  In 2012 he was awared the SEDI Doornbos Memorial Prize for outstanding work on the Earth's deep interior by a young scientist.  He works extensively with magnetic observations from satellites and ground observatories.  In 2010 he was lead author of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field and he was chair of the IAGA Working Group V-MOD from 2011 to 2015.  Reference models of the Earth's magnetic field are used as a source of orientation information in a wide variety of applications, for example in mobile devices and for satellite navigation.  Recent theoretical work has encompassed development of optimized local inversion schemes, quasi-geostrophic wave motions in the outer core, and investigations of geodynamo simulations designed to reproduce aspects of geomagnetic secular variation. More broadly he has interests in inverse problems, machine learning, the deep Earth, planetary magnetic fields, and  geophysical fluid dynamics.
