En af de største flaskehalse, der forhindrer en kommerciel udnyttelse af integrerede optiske kredsløb, er problemet med at koble lys effektivt mellem dele, der er meget forskellige i størrelsesskala. F.eks. kan nævnes forskellen i størrelse mellem optiske fibre (mikrometre i diameter) og fotoniske bølgeledere (hundrede nanometre i tykkelse). I et nyt projektforslag er formålet at skabe komponenter baseret på negative indeksmaterialer, der effektivt kan koble lys til og fra optiske bølgeledere, som har bølgelederkerner af forskellig størrelse. Negative indeksmaterialer (NIM) er kunstigt strukturerede materialer med tunede egenskaber, således at der kan opnås ”unaturlige” opførsler for visse bølgelængder af lyset. I bølgelederkoblere vil man kunne opnå at bryde lysbølgen den ”forkerte” vej og at forstærke dæmpede bølger, som normalt dæmpes eksponentielt. Ved at udnytte disse to egenskaber vil man kunne opnå en bedre opløsning end ved brug af klassisk optik og gøre det muligt at fokusere det indfaldne lys til et punkt, der i størrelse matcher modtagerdelens bølgelederkerne. En NIM-komponent vil ikke kun mindske den typiske længde af koblingsregionen fra hundrede af mikrometre til få mikrometre, men vil også kunne være integreret på chippen og dermed forenkle koblingen.Education/Academic qualification
