Transport systems are a vital part of society and the economy, enabling movement of people and goods and making it imperative to plan and operate them in an efficient, equitable and sustainable manner. However, transport systems are complex, involving heterogeneous travellers who make choices in multimodal networks that are dynamic and prone to congestion. Therefore, gaining a fundamental understanding of transport systems and developing methodologies that can model them realistically are critical.

Towards this end, the Transportation Systems Modelling Section focusses on (i) developing methodologies that ensure behavioural realism, theoretical consistency and tractability in large real-world transport networks, (ii) gaining behavioural insights by utilising rich data sources, and (iii) designing and optimising transport systems, including roadpricing schemes, bicycle networks and public transport systems. We have a combined focus across modes of transport, including bicycle, car and public transport.

UN Sustainable Development Goals
