Unlocking the full potential: enhancing activation mechanisms of rheological modifiers in paint

Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

Description

Controlling the flow behavior of paint before, during, and after application is crucial. Before application, paint is often stored for extended periods and must resist phase separation and pigment settlement due to gravity. During application, it should flow easily for better spray atomization and spreading. After application, the paint must regain its viscosity quickly enough to prevent sagging but slowly enough to ensure good leveling.

Rheological modifiers are essential for adjusting the paint’s rheological behavior. These modifiers come in various types, each with distinct physicochemical working mechanisms. Some are readily used in formulations, while others require special activation to function effectively. Improper or incomplete activation can lead to excessive use of materials or energy to achieve the required amount of sag resistance.

This study aims to understand and optimize the activation mechanisms of two different rheological modifiers: bentonites and amide waxes. Traditionally these modifiers are added before the pigments and dispersed together with them for a certain time until the temperature is raised enough through viscous heat generation. However, increasing the temperature of the whole batch might require a delicate design of the mill base formula, causing long processing times, and perhaps incomplete activation of the modifiers resulting in excessive use of these materials to achieve the desired performance.

This study aims to explore and optimize the activation mechanisms of bentonite and amide waxes used in low-medium polarity paint systems. By analyzing the effects of temperature, shear forces, and specific chemicals on these modifiers, the study will help to understand how these rheological modifiers behave and demonstrate how optimal activation can save both material and energy.
