The depth variation of sea currents - How close to the keel is the STW measured?

Description
It is assumed that the DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) sensor measures the STW (speed-through-water) of a ship by viewing the speed of the currents on a deeper layer rather than the surface. This presentation focuses on the three dimensional (3D) sea currents confronted by a ship sailing in the Baltic sea for 90 days. The scope of the analysis is to identify if depth, as a third dimension of the global sea currents, is considered significant for the shipping industry.
