Stephan Johannes Østergaard, Different control strategies for floating offshore wind turbines, Master project

    Activity: Examinations and supervisionSupervisor activities

    Description

This project investigates different control strategies for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT). These different control strategies will be compared to conventional control strategies and the effect on power production and loads on the wind turbine will be evaluated. The when using FOWT's waves will cause a pitch response of the FOWT and when the FOWT operate in region 3 the result will be negative damping in that motion. The project considers the following research questions: (1) How can we limit the motion response of the FOWT using conventional control technologies, and at what cost in power production and loads on the FOWT? (2) How can the performance of the FOWT be increased using more advanced control methods? To perform this investigation a numerical model of a FOWT is built based on the IEA 15 MW reference wind turbine.
