Modelling electron competition in denitrifying microbial communities through an analogy to electric circuits: simple is better

Heterotrophic denitrification is of the four-step reduction of nitrate to dinitrogen gas in where each step competes for electrons that derive from organic carbon oxidation. A model describing denitrification rates as current flow in electric circuits is proposed (Almeida et al., 1997). The model has with fewer parameters than existing models and can be integrated in existing model structures. Model calibration was performed with data from batch experiments with denitrifying communities with different nitrogen oxides, and different carbon sources in excess. The electron distribution preference and electron uptake rates varied between the carbon sources. The electric-circuit analogy model performed as well as more complex models.
