Description

In industrial biotechnology, raw materials as well as the biocatalytic system itself are complex and subject to high variability. To reduce this complexity the number of potentially influential factors are often reduced by the usage of defined media, simple predetermined feed patterns as well as constant process conditions. These simplifications limit the usage of waste streams as feedstocks and optimal operation by dynamic control. Kinetic models and model-based techniques allow to handle a greater degree of complexity. Besides showing recent monitoring and control case studies on recombinant C. glutamicum and E. coli cultivation processes, a focus is given to potential feedback to strain engineers for a holistic strain and process development.
