Description

Growing worldwide population and increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emission of more than 37 Gt per year (according to IEA in 2023,[1]) are accelerating global warming and climate change. A couple of actions have been proposed by governments and the IPCC to counteract global warming. Photo-electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is a technology, which allows the direct utilization and conversion of captured CO2 into CO2 neutral chemicals and fuels by using excess electricity and sunlight. This requires the development of efficient photo-catalysts and photo-electrolyzers. Here, we present the impact of photocathodes based on Metal-Organic Frameworks and different electrolyzer configurations on the efficiency and product selectivity for CO2 reduction from the gas phase [2].
