Direct Electrochemical Detection of the Herbicide Linuron in Tap Water

The heavy use of pesticides in agriculture lead to leaching of these chemicals into the environment - in particular soil and water - causing severe contamination. One of the most problematic pesticides is Linuron, which is used to inhibit the growth of grass and weed to support the growth of crops. Linuron is known to be very toxic to aquatic organisms and is likely harmful to humans if ingested by food or water.

Today, conventional detection of Linuron in water is being carried out using time consuming and expensive High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). With today’s portable accurate microelectronics, electrochemical detection is ideal for replacing demanding techniques such as HPLC measurements. This study demonstrates a proof-of-concept for Linuron detection directly in water with no need for sample pre-treatment.
