AI is already influencing jobs, employees, and management and will thus have a significant effect on the future workplace. In management, AI can support the manager, overtake some of the manager’s tasks, or even replace them. In particular, AI can help a manager in decision-making, measure workers’ performance, reward (or fire) workers, distribute working tasks, etc. While this may provide performance benefits in some areas it may have severe negative implications in others.

In this session, the three researchers will present cases from different companies in Denmark where AI is already used in management – covering service companies and digital platforms. They will discuss the benefits and challenges in companies when using AI in management. Managers may welcome AI when it supports their work, leads to quicker decisions, and frees time for other tasks. But to use AI for performance measurement and automatic decisions includes a risk of treating workers like machines and discriminating against them. This may lead to increased employee turnover, loss of competence and overall competitive advantage.
