The aim of this work is to evaluate the IR technique for mass flow measurement of biomass fuel and design and evaluation of two IR sensors that are cheap, simple and easy to handle. The results presented here show that the IR sensors have similar signal behaviour in the case of the pulverized biomass as that of coal. Further analyses of the signal from the IR sensors in this installation show that the measured IR signal has a maximum with the measured boiler load. For the loads greater than 65 MW the IRsensor signal shows the “anti-correlation” with the load. A signal filtering scheme and a model was developed that can be used for signal handling and calibration of the IR sensors. The information on the mass flow from the designed IR sensors expected to be cost effective as the IR sensor can provide the same quality of information on the mass flow as the FTIR system that is been tested on both pulverized fuel of biomass and coal. The major benefit of this system in comparison to a commercial mass flow monitoring system is the cost, ease of handling and application. Further recommendation is given for continuation of the tests to enable identification of parameters that enhance signal quality of the IR sensors in an installation and also test of a scheme for calibration of an IR sensor system.
