A coupled RL and transport model for mixed-field proton irradiation of Al2O3:C

Our main approach for in vivo dosimetry in radiotherapy treatment and clinical imaging techniques is based on the radioluminescence and optically Stimulated luminescence response from Al2O3:C crystals attached to optical fibres. In contrast to high-energy photon beams, high-LET effects, geometry effects and inelastic hadronic scattering occur in proton therapy dosimetry. To investigate these aspects in relation to our system, we have combined simulation of particle transportation with a luminescence generation code based on track structure theory. The model was found to qualitatively reproduce the main features in experimental data from proton irradiations. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
