Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about the possibility of using electric drive vehicles (plug-in hybrids or all electric or fuel cell) for rendering services to the electric utility (using the on board vehicle storage and power electronic systems). Such a scheme, where in the electric drive vehicle is used to provide grid service, is commonly referred to as Vehicle to Grid (V2G). The main aim of this project is to examine the feasibility of the V2G technology by identifying the driving factors and the bottle necks in developing such a technology. This study also discusses the different vehicle to grid technologies, the key participants/stake holders and analyzes the interaction between different players/stake holders of this technology. Although, a few architectures and business models are being proposed, so far no comprehensive study has been made to analyze the manner in which different stake holders interact. Hence, the scope of this project is to examine and discuss the various business models and their interaction with different key players. The evaluation of various business models and architectures will be made keeping in view some of the special features of the Danish System. One of the key features of the Danish system is high wind power penetration in the electricity networks (Installed wind power capacity is about 20% of the total load) and this penetration level is expected to increase to 50% in the near future. Hence, it is important to investigate technologies which will ensure secure, reliable and economic operation of the power system with such a high wind power penetration. This project investigates the manner in which electric drive vehicle could be used (in a cost effective manner-both for utility and vehicle owners) to ensure security and reliability of systems with high penetration of renewable energy.
