The objectives of the project is to develop a frazil/pancake model suitable for use by the National Ice Center (NIC) in the marginal ice zone. The ice analyst/forecasters at NIC now use many kinds of data to produce an analysis and forecast of ice conditions near the ice edge in isolated specific regions. The model (tool) developed in this project will aid in this work. This model is for the dynamics and thermodynamics of sea ice on scales of 20 km and 1 day. It forms frazil and pancake ice using as a measure of cold, the change in ice concentration from one day to the next as seen in SSM/I. The thickness of the newly-formed ice is governed by the wind speed.
