Fatigue in steel highway bridges under random loading is studied. In the experimental part of the investigation, fatigue test series have been carried through on welded plate test specimens. In the fatigue tests with variable amplitude loading, a load history corresponding to one week's traffic loading is used. This load history was determined from strain gage measurements on the deck structure of the Farø bridges. In the project, the fatigue life is determined theoretically on the basis of a fracture mechanics analysis. The results, which have been obtained until now in both the experimental and the theoretical part of the investigation, indicate that Miner's rule, which is normally used in the design against fatigue for steel bridges may give rather unconservative results.
