Danish Fishers PO has decided that all commercial fisheries in Denmark should, where possible, operate at the standard necessary to obtain MSC certification by 2012. This project is the third of a suite of EFF-financed projects supporting this challenge.

Of particular focus is the absence of management plan for plaice and sole in Kattegat-Skagerrak area, which is one of the prerequisite for certification. While sole stock is regularly assessed by ICES, implying that a management plan could potentially be established on a standard basis, the situation is more problematic for plaice, which assessment suffers from a number of uncertainties and issues which cannot be addressed through a standard benchmark process. DTU Aqua has thus been involved in order to clarify the biological knowledge base for this stock and contribute to suggestions for a more tailored approach to a management plan.

The project is coordinated by Danish Fishermen's Producers' Organisation, Denmark.
