Cryptology is the science of keeping data secret and authentic, of digital signatures, cryptanalysis of cryptographic algorithms and so on. At DTU Mathematics, we mainly focus on symmetric cryptology, which includes encryption methods where the sender and the receiver of the message share the same key. These methods typically are based more on computer science techniques than on hard-core mathematics, in contrast with asymmetric cryptology, which includes encryption methods where the sender of the message uses a publicly known key to encrypt, and only the receiver possessing the correct secret key is able to decrypt. We work with the design and cryptanalysis ("breaking") of cryptographic algorithms, in particular block ciphers, stream ciphers (which are both encryption methods) and hash functions (methods to produce a digital fingerprint of a message). I have mostly been working on the design and cryptanalysis of hash functions, and I am a co-designer of the hash function Grøstl, which is in the final of a prominent competition for a new American standard.
