Rolf Henrik Berg joined DTU Nanotech as Professor (Forskningsspecialist) in 2008. He was appointed Professor in Nanotechnology and Innovation at DTU in 2011.

During his early years at Risø National Laboratory (now DTU Risø campus), Rolf Henrik Berg co-discovered peptide nucleic acids (PNA) - an artificial form of DNA - together with Michael Egholm, Peter E. Nielsen and Ole Buchardt from the University of Copenhagen (Nielsen et al., Science, 1991).

More than 2,500 scientific articles - and more than 25,000 US patents (issued or pending) - report the properties and uses of PNA.

Other works include co-discovery of photoanisotropic peptides - useful in photonics applications - together with DTU colleagues (Berg et al., Nature, 1996).

In total, Rolf Henrik Berg is co-inventor of 40 issued or pending US patents (and foreign equivalents) on technologies forming the basis of 7 new viable companies. The product portfolio protected by this patent estate includes a number of products which have received FDA clearance.

Rolf Henrik Berg is co-founder of PNA Diagnostics  A/S, former Director of IPR at Noliac A/S, and former Vice President at ChemoMetec A/S (listed on Nasdaq Nordic Stock Exchange). He was a Research Fellow at the Rockefeller University and received his PhD from the University of Copenhagen.

Rolf Henrik Berg is recipient of the DTU Innovation Prize 2012. He is elected member of the Danish Academy of Natural Sciences and the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV).
